Leaves: Leaves compound. Alternate. Leaflets narrowly to broadly lanceolate or sometimes ovate, 3.5–8(–10) cm long, 1.3–5.4 (–6.5) cm wide. Apex longacuminate to short-caudate. Base cuneate to subtruncate. Surfaces sparsely appressed pubescent, sometimes slightly more so on lower surface, becoming glabrate; leaflets chartaceous. Leaflet margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules present small, caducous. Leaflet stipels minute.

Flowers: Flowers usually 4–15 in axillary pseudoracemes 3–9 cm long. Flowers papilionaceous; bracteoles present, caducous. Calyx 20–28 mm long, sparsely appressed pubescent, upper edge smoothly and strongly concave, apex weakly apiculate, upper lip 10–15 mm long, the 2 lobes connate except in distal 2–3.5 mm, lowest lobe narrowly ovate to ovate, 4–6 mm long. Calyx bilabiate, 5-lobed, the upper lip large and with 2 lobes connate along the upper margin, the lower lip trifid. Corolla apparently rose purple, standard with a white spot and streaks at base, 39–45 mm long, wing petals 36–43 mm long, keel petals 38–47 mm long. Stamens 10; upper stamen distinct at base, loosely adhering to the other 9 up to middle, the other 9 connate into a tube. Ovary superior, stipitate; ovules 5–20; style incurved, glabrous; stigma small, terminal.

Fruit: Pods compressed; 12–16 cm long; 2.3–3.5 cm wide; sparsely appressed pubescent; each valve with an inconspicuous sutural ridge and an additional longitudinal ridge 0.5–2 mm below the upper suture. Seeds dark reddish brown; oblong–elliptic; strongly compressed; 17–22 mm long; 12– 14 mm wide; the hilum 12–15 mm long. Seeds transversely arranged; ellipsoid; hilum elongated; oblong; with a small; papery; persistent rim–aril.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Apparently uncommon in open; dry sites; mesic shrubland; and steep slopes of gulches.
